Relationship Reflection...What makes me, Me!

Relationships make a person who they are, not alone physically but emotionally and psychologically, as well. The actor Tom Hanks said, “Truth is, I'll never know all there is to know about you just as you will never know all there is to know about me. Humans are by nature too complicated to be understood fully. So, we can choose either to approach our fellow human beings with suspicion or to approach them with an open mind, a dash of optimism and a great deal of candour.” The relationships I have with the people in my life bring a dynamic and fairly positive influence in my own decisions.

The most important relationship of my life, and in my mind, is with my fiancé. He is my rock and supporter for everything I do. This is more than a relationship, it is a partnership as we share responsibility for our daughter, the bills, and currently buying a home together. We support each other in everything we do and encourage each other to push ourselves. The relationship with my baby girl is important to me, as I work every day to foster positive development and encourage her curiosity as she grows. The relationship with my parents and extended family also influence my decisions and helped me realize the importance of an equal partnership with a companion. The relationships with my animals are important to me as well. They are all family and influence my life.

Some of the challenges I have dealt with in relationships is distance. Originally from Central New York, I have moved all over the state and as I moved from place to place my relationships suffered. I have lost life-time friends due to the difficulties of distance. The one thing I have learned is that in all relationships, it takes two people to make it work. I do regret losing some people but all people that enter your life with have an impact in some way.

Looking at all the relationships I have in my life, between my partner, my family, my friends and the families I work with, I have come to realize that an open-mind helps foster a positive relationship. When you meet a new person, family or friend, an open mind will allow you to see the person without the influences of others. This helps as an educator because I am able to begin relationships with families without biases.
