“A little nonsense now and then, is cherished by the wisest men.”
― Roald Dahl, Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator
“Play is the work of the child.” – Maria Montessori
"Play gives children a chance to practice what they are learning.” – Mr. Rogers
"Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood.” - Fred Rogers
As a child, play was a way to escape the stresses of school. We just needed a good pair of sneakers and a flashlight, for when the sun went down. Those were the days when we could play outside in the quiet neighborhood without constant supervision, now children are not able to experience the freedom of play. This week has reminded me of the fun summer nights, when the daytime lasted for a long time we would be playing kick the can until way past our bedtimes.
Children today can enjoy the same aspects of play we had twenty years old, but they need to be supervised due to escalating dangers. Unfortunately, even small towns are becoming too dangerous for children to be left to walk to their friends homes to play. I encourage children to play outside during all seasons and use their imaginations to create play scenarios.
